The WE-BEST project aims to evaluate the applicability of Blockchain technology (BCT) in the Italian wine and extra virgin olive oil industries with the final scope to create an effective traceability system to guarantee the final consumer maximum transparency with respect to the main steps of the production process and the main characteristics of the product. This technology, based on the concept of process standardization guarantees greater safety for the consumer and the entire chain thanks to a diffused knowledge about “origin, authenticity, custody, and integrity”, reducing the asymmetric information characterizing the agri-food industry. The goals in summary are to make visible the origin of raw materials and sustainability of the production processes, to protect against frauds and promote transparency in international trade, with benefits both for wine and EVOO supply chain actors and for consumers.
